How To Prepare Your Child For A School Ski Trip

A school ski trip is such an exciting opportunity for your child, often a chance to experience something they wouldn’t normally have chance to. My son recently went on a school ski trip to Italy, whilst he was apprehensive before going, once there he had the best time. Going on a trip without parents is pretty daunting, especially if that trip involves doing to something totally new and out of their comfort zone. We did a few things to prepare Jack for his trip so I thought I would share them here.

How To Prepare Your Child For A School Ski Trip

Practice Ski sessions

Our school offered a couple of practice sessions included in the price of the trip which is great however you may want to consider booking some slots in at your local ski/dry slope if your child is a little nervous. Jack had never been skiing in his life but the practice lessons soon put him at ease. I will say though the instructors at the resort are amazing with beginners.

Let them pick their ski wear

Go shopping for their ski wear together, get them to pick out their ski clothes and accessories. I find involving children as much as possible in big events in their lives helps them process everything and makes everything less daunting.

Give them more independence

Whilst there will be plenty of teachers supervising, there will also be times when your child will be responsible for themselves. The months leading up to their trip is a good time to start giving them more responsibilities at home and more independence. On their trip they will be responsible for their belongings, their room and of course personal hygiene.

Look up the resort they are staying at online

These days you can find Youtube videos and blog posts1 on pretty much anything. Have a little google on the resort your child is staying at and talk through what you find, this is a great way for your child to familiarise themselves with their upcoming surroundings.

And lastly, lots of positive talk

You want your child to go away feeling excited about whats to come. I spent a lot of time talking about how amazing the opportunity to go on a school ski trip was and how much fun they were going to have. Obviously inside I was terrified for him but I never let on that I was!

Remind them to have lots of fun and don’t forget the sun cream!!
