5 Easy Ways To Stay Organised On School Mornings

September 5, 2017

It’s that time of year again, back to school! Give yourselves a big pat on the back for surviving the school holidays. Don’t get too excited though, you’ve now got to get yourself and the kids out of the house without risking your safety by rushing in to school. I’m a bit of a school run veteran now as my eldest is 13. I thought I would share my 5 top tips on ways to stay organised on school mornings. I find by being organised it means most days run smoothly and I’m less likely to lose my shit.

5 Ways To Stay Organised On School Mornings

Prepare lunches the night before

Honestly this will save you so much time, yep its a pain in the arse when all you want to do is collapse on the sofa but there’s nothing worse than running really¬†late and realising the packed lunches aren’t made! We make the lunchboxes up and fill the drinks bottles and pop them in the fridge, then all we need to do is grab them in the morning, Just don’t forget them! (it will happen at some point)

Lay out uniform including pants and socks

I make sure my son has a pair of trousers, shirt and jumper all on one hanger so he just has to grab one thing out and its all there ready for him to put on, no excuse of ‘I can’t find my…’ For younger children I would also get out underwear. I can’t promise though, even with best intentions, you wont go in expecting them to be fully dressed and find them stood staring into space with only one sock on!

Make a note on your calendar/phone when P.E day is, and for the love of god, DON’T FORGET TO WASH IT

If there’s one thing that’s going to send you over the edge its P.E kits. Realising that their kit isn’t even washed let alone packed is a bloody nightmare. Whack that kit in the wash the second they get home, get it dried and packed back in its bag ready for next week, and mark on the calendar or set a reminder on your phone so you don’t forget to take it every week.

Give yourself plenty of time to get out of the house

Step away from the snooze button! Never underestimate how long it takes a child to get their shoes and coats on, what should take seconds will most likely turn into a battle of wills with at least one of you crying (probably you) And lets not forget the walk into school, when even the speediest of children will do an amazing impression of a snail.

Join the school Facebook/twitter page

For some reason children completely lose their memory when it comes to important information they need to tell you. Most schools these days will have a social media account where you will find all the information your little darlings forget to mention. No one wants to get to school to find out it’s world book day, non uniform day or worse still.. school isn’t even open!

If you have any tips or hacks on how to stay organised on school mornings please leave them in the comments.

  1. Yes, these are such fab tips and I do all of these except the calendar one and I really need to start doing that one this year. Last year there were a few times where I got my days mixed up. Awkward.

Great tips – I start of the week organised preparing lunches, having clothes ready but by about Thursday I have completely lost it!! I am definitely going to try harder this year!!

I’m just starting out as a school mum. We’ve been doing nursery runs for the past 3 years but that was only 2 days a week and I know there is so much more to organise with school (and 1 still in nursery 2 days). Great tips. I have everything prepared for the morning and I’ve started a daily check list as each day is so different!

  4. I always get these clothes ready the night before and then my eldest daughter can get ready on her own. It makes such a different to our mornings! Great advice x

Give yourself plenty of time – that;s where I’m going wrong!! I really struggle to get out of bed each morning, and to get the kids out of bed, and so we end up running around like crazy trying to get all four kids ready and out of the house. SO stressful!!

  6. I would be lost without the school Facebook page as I am always forgetting something! I always mean to do lunches in the morning but as he only has it once a week I always forget!

Thank heavens for our Facebook group at school. I feel pretty organised at the mo but I know once my second is also at school that will change haha!

  8. Great tips!!! Im now religiously using my google calendar.
I have four at school and two pre schoolers ….i need all the tips i can get! Xxx

  9. We have to be put the door by 7 for a 7.30 start so staying organised is crucial! All our class (at schools request) has an email and a whatsapp group to share class info and check on things like “Mrs C told us we can wear beach clothes tomorrow”! It’s a faff for the person managing he group (me) and some classes take it to extremes with 73 messages about PE (on the same day every week) before 6am but on the whole it is super useful.
