Hooray for half term – October 2016

Now I know a lot of people dread half term, I was one of those people but as your children get older half term becomes the only time you get to see them. Jack is 12 now and at high school, he leaves the house at 7.45 and depending on what after school activities he has on sometimes we don’t see him untill 7 that night, and then unless there’s something we all watch on tv he will disappear off to his room to play on the Xbox with his mates. He spends Saturdays with his dad so really we only get to see him Sundays and im sure the time will come soon when he would much rather be with his mates than us – sad times. I also love half term because there’s no manic rushing around at 7 making sure he’s got everything he needs for the day!

With small children it can be a tough job keeping them entertained in the holidays and not making your self bankrupt in the process. As much as you want to tear your hair out by the end of the week, just remember, there will come a time when they will no longer want to spend their days with you and you wish you could spend more time with them (not going to lie though, there are definitely times when I’m glad he’s buggered off to his mates, there’s only so many times you can listen to someone talk about Pokemon for!

I thought I’d do a little blog on how we have spent our week, not all of it has been with jack though – see I told you, but my husband had time off work too so we have had lots of family time, I hope you get some ideas of some low cost activities to keep the littles entertained and if you have any other ideas let me know in the comments, so here’s what we have been up to….

Monday – A trip to the park

We are lucky that there are two fairly big parks in our town, the main one has a large duck pond, play area and some cages with recued animals in, there are birds, guinea pigs and bunnies, the animal rescue has been in the park since I was a little girl so it’s lovely to bring my children here now. Ava loves animals so this is the perfect free place to take her, plus she would happily spend all day on the swings. Jack had a sleepover at his friends house, judging by how many times he fell asleep in the car on tuesday, I’m not sure there was much sleeping going on.

Tuesday – Costa and Disney On Ice

Disney On Ice was not a planned thing at all you can read how we ended up going there in my blog here. Other than that we had a little mooch around the shops with my dad and a costa at Jacks request.

Wednesday – Pumpkin picking and Waterworld

Jack left us to go to waterworld with his dad and he took a friend along too for the first time, they had a lot of fun, if you don’t have a waterworld it’s basically a big indoor waterpark. As Andy was off work we took Ava to a pumpkin patch, we went to one last year that was at a pick your own farm and although it was good it was a bit commercial, I think we may go again at the weekend though because the farm shop is really nice. The pumpkin patch today however was like the pumpkin patch of dreams, I wish halloween was as big in the UK as it is in America, this farm definitely fulfilled my halloween pumpkin picking needs tough.

Thursday – Pumpkin carving

We decided to have a day in the house carving the pumpkins we picked yesterday, we each had a pumpkin to carve and I gave Ava some tiny pumpkins to play with, somehow I ended up carving everyone else’s go figure! I like the idea of carving pumpkins but my god it’s hard work, maybe next year I will paint them! img_7284

Friday – Absolutely nothing

Friday we did nothing, it was a very well deserved chill out day! IMG_7293.JPG

We have had a lovely half term, I hope you have too.

Something a bit exciting..

On Tuesday we were given the opportunity to go to Disney On Ice – Frozen, V.I.P style at the Barclaycard arena in Birmingham thanks to  mothers meetings uk , I very nearly missed it as the email went to my junk box, so check your junk people! I would be kicking myself now if I had missed out as I absolutely LOVE Disney. I ummed and arred about taking Ava as normally she’s asleep by 5 (for a baby, she likes her sleep, don’t hate me!) and that was the time we had to be there, but how could I not take my little Disney princess in training? She had a snooze on the way over in the car and managed amazingly with the rest of the night, shes a good ‘un (most of the time) I also took my Frozen hating husband and 12-year-old son, they loved it but don’t tell them I told you that!

I have been to Disney On Ice once before and it was amazing, so I was really looking forward to going again. We arrived at 5.15 to collect our V.I.P tickets along with some other lovely mommies like BrummyMummyof2 and MummyPiggles eeek! I’d like to say I went over and chatted but instead I chickened out like the complete idiot that I am! Hopefully if I ever get the chance again I will be a bit braver. It’s a bit scary meeting people with such a large following, you can check out brummymummyof2 YouTube channel hereBrummyMummyof2 Youtube , her videos and vlogs are fab although be warned, they are no good if you have a slight shopping addiction like myself! And if you want a smile putting on your face check out mummypiggles Instagram page, her posts are so funny!

When we arrived we were shown to a private bar area where complimentary sandwiches, fresh fruit, healthy kiddy snacks and drinks had been laid out, there were also colouring pages for the children. After a short while we were called up stairs to see some special guests! Anna and Elsa were up there waiting to meet you and have a photo taken, obviously I got in the photo with Ava, what girl doesn’t want a photo with a couple of Disney princesses. They fussed over Ava and I held back the tears, yes I’m one of those weirdos that cries when I’m happy, don’t judge! We were also given a goody bag, everyone loves a goody bag, it contained a Sven beanie baby, show guide and colouring book – totally having that for myself.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The show itself is truly spectacular, completely magical, there were even fireworks! I was amazed at how much of the film they managed to recreate. The cast were all fantastic and to begin with some well loved Disney characters also made an appearance. Ava loved having a little dance to all the songs and I’m pretty sure Jack was impressed with the ice-skating and stage show. Disney On Ice is a must for any fan, and the V.I.P tickets certainly make little girls and boys (and big ones) dreams come true.

We loved it so much we are going to make it a yearly Christmas tradition to see Disney On Ice.

Urban Decay Ultimate Basics first look

I’m a big fan of the Urban Decay Naked palettes, I love all the colours in them and how easy they are to apply, especially for someone that’s not that great at applying eye shadow like myself, when I say I’m winging it I’m most definitely not on about my eyeliner (in fact I’ve resigned myself to the fact I will never perfect a winged eye!) OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

When I saw Urban Decay were bringing out a new palette I knew I had to have it, and when I saw a picture of the colours I knew I needed it straight away…obviously

I’m really loving all the Autumn eye colours at the minute so this palette is perfect and the packaging like all the other naked palettes is beautiful. As always it comes with a brush, this one is like the one in the smokey palette with a smudger. It has a large mirror too so if like me !you don’t like to take too much in the way of make up with you when you go away, this would be really handy (I’d take all my make up if I could but with 2 kids and a tendency to pack for EVERY eventuality there is absolutely not enough room)OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I love this time of year and I’m really looking forward to using this palette.

8 months of Ava

Hello again, yet again I’m sat here wondering how on earth my little squidge is now 8 months old. To say it’s gone quick is quite an understatement! Sooo what has Ava been up to…

The week before Ava turned 8 months I was convinced I would have nothing to write about and then as if by magic overnight she learnt to crawl, it’s slightly painful watching her crawl, it’s not the most graceful thing I’ve ever seen and is more of a one armed army crawl than a proper crawl. She now has 2 teeth at the bottom and I’m sure the top 2 will be making an appearance soon (teething fairy, please be kind) she loves dancing and will start dancing as soon as she hears music or if you ask her to dance, she also dances at strangers to get their attention lol such a little madam. She can wave hello and goodbye and clap when you ask her too and I’m pretty sure she attempted to kiss me earlier, so cute!

Ava loves food, we haven’t found anything she doesn’t like yet, cheese and broccoli seem to be firm favourites but she really is just a bottomless pit. She does a lot of talking, we haven’t got a clue what she’s trying to say but it’s funny to listen too. As for actual words, she says hiya and daddy but refuses to attempt to say mama – typical.image

Ava loves animals, we have 2 cats and 2 dogs and there’s nothing she loves more than chasing after them and I always know when she’s going after them because she starts laughing. We love going to the farm and going to see the ducks. Ava loves her snugly blankets and goes to sleep sucking on them, they do not smell pretty! Her favourite programmes are Peppa pig, Ben and holly and paw patrol. She loves teddies and Lamaze toys. Her big brother is probably her favourite person, she absolutely adores him ❤️image

As for dislikes, there’s not much she doesn’t like but if you take something away from her all hell will break loose, especially if it’s something she shouldn’t have!image

In one month she has changed sooo much, I can’t wait to see what she will learn next month.image Love Amy xx

A note to everyone that feels like they are losing their shit..

So bit of a personal post here but I think sometimes we all need to know that other people are feeling the same. Ava has been a bit of a nightmare just recently, teething plus a good dose of separation anxiety does not make for a happy baby and I’m not afraid to admit its/still is bloody hard. There have been days when I’ve cried along with her and days when I’ve felt a bit angry towards her, major mom guilt on that one but when you have listened to them cry and whinge all day and nothing you do makes them happy you can’t help get a bit frustrated and text your husband to say you are throwing the baby out (ahem, I wouldn’t actually throw her out) That’s not as bad as when she was about 6 weeks old and I text to say I hated her! I didn’t mean it but I was sooo sleep deprived at the time I don’t think I liked anyone!

Since having ava there has been numerous days when I’ve wanted to run away, a crying baby and lack of sleep does nothing for your mental well-being. You can really beat yourself up for feeling rubbish but we are all entitled to our ‘off’ days, apparently babies like to have plenty of ‘off’ days, usually just as you start to think you’ve got this parenting malarkey sorted BOOM say hello to psycho baby again!

Parenting is hard, there’s no sugar-coating it so don’t buy into that bullshit that it will be amazing all the time because quite frankly it’s not, in amongst all the fun and lovely days there will be days when you question your own sanity for having this demon child! but hang on in there, tomorrow is a new day and if you are really struggling make sure you talk to someone, social media is great for this, through Instagram I’ve found lots of parents I can turn to for advice or just generally have a whinge about how my child is being a bit of a dick.

We are all just winging it and losing our shit every now and again, just remember, your little darling wont remember about the time you didn’t play with them every second of the day or if you didn’t leave the house or get dressed (why isn’t it socially acceptable to wear your pjs out of the house yet??) Its ok not to have your shit together every day, if at all, it just means you are human and as I keep telling myself, it will get easier, you may want to punch anyone in the face that tells you that right now but I promise it does!

Top tips for when it all gets a bit much

  • Take a minute – if you baby is making you want to tear your hair out, put them in a safe place and just take a minute for yourself to calm down/have a little cry/go to the toilet in peace.
  • Always try to make time for yourself – I have a bath and catch up on vlogs I watch on YouTube  when ava has gone to bed at night then me and my husband watch TV together (read – sit on our phones whilst the TV is on haha must work on that!)
  • Talk to someone- have a good old rant if you need to!

  • If all else fails get yourself a nice drink,a takeaway and eat your feelings – not a good tip and probably the reason I go to slimming world! but some nice food certainly improves my mood.
